Fig_11_General_distribution_2.jpg

The study of the color variants of the dung beetle Bolbites onitoides, whose distribution is shown here, led me to the subspecies problem, which is also a central part of my PhD thesis.

Plate 8_Labrum.jpg

The labrum of Streblopus opatroides and its sister species, S. punctatus. My 2020 article on Streblopus is one of few so far published to have studied the mouthparts of South American dung beetles.

Plate_2_granigerus_syntype.jpg

In my 2019 visit to the Dresden museum, I discovered the specimen above, a syntype of Ateuchus granigerus (Harold, 1875). This, as reported in my 2020 paper, was the first record of a Harold specimen in Dresden.

Plate 1.tif

In 2018, Fernando Vaz-de-Mello and I published a review of the South American dung beetle species described by Ludwig Redtenbacher, the leading 19th-century coleopterist of Austria.

Plate 5.tif

One of the syntypes of Canthon granulifer Schmidt, 1920. This specimen was found by me in the Müncheberg museum in 2016 and is part of my 2018 study with Fernando Vaz-de-Mello of the Canthon described by Adolf Schmidt.

Fig 38_attenboroughi and edmondsi.jpg

Two of the six new species of Sylvicanthon described in my 2018 monograph: S. edmondsi (above), named after my American coleopterist colleague W.D. Edmonds, and S. attenboroughi (below), named, of course, after the great Sir David Attenborough.

Fig 36_bridarollii cline.jpg

One of my favourite discoveries; the population intergradation of Sylvicanthon bridarollii. This intergradation is composed of at least four morphological clines.

Taurus_Marcgrave's picture.tif

The oldest known illustration of a Brazilian dung beetle: the engraving of a Coprophanaeus ensifer published in Georg Marcgrave's part of Historia Naturalis Brasiliae (1648), one of the earliest accounts of the natural history of Brazil. This and other illustrations are discussed in the 2017 paper by my colleagues and me on the type specimens of Megaphanaeus.

Figure4.jpg

My first new species: Gromphas jardim, from Brazil and Bolivia, described in my 2015 paper with Fernando Vaz-de-Mello. The specimen above, which I suppose was collected by Alcide d'Orbigny in Bolivia in 1832, was the first male that I saw of the species and its discovery confirmed my suspicion that a previously found female was not an odd-looking G. amazonica, but belonged instead to a then-yet undescribed species. This male was found during my first visit to the London museum on 8th July 2014, also the day that my 90-year-old grandfather, Arlindo Jardim, passed away. It is after him that the species is named.

Figure6.tif

The phylogeny of the Gromphas dung beetles as hypothesised in my 2015 paper.
